things i have been up to instead of blogging:
transitions. two jobs ending (one naturally because a child goes to school and another by choice to leave a very unhealthy environment) and two jobs beginning in place of them. the quite lovely thing is that i have been working at minimum 60 hours per week for the last...years? i totaled up the hours that i will be working now and it's almost normal--in the 40-50 hours range. i could cry with joy. for serious.
catching up on dvr'd shows. natasha and i have a weekly date to watch some of them, but the others are watched whenever a chance occurs.
pinning. like crazy!
paying it forward. we had so many people who were generous with time and resources during our wedding prep. i have two girlfriends getting married within a month of each other (last weekend and then in june) so i am trying to make myself as available to them as i can!
coming up with some jewelry design ideas. i would like to open my etsy store again, and am trying to come up with some new and different stuff. on that note, anything you would like to see?
organizing. from the pantry to my iPhoto libraries. i love it. but it is a bit time-consuming since, well, i'm me. :-)
missing writing/blogging. i think about posts often. they just never seem to materialize. hopefully as transition continues to a more livable schedule, that will change. i miss this place!
working in the yard. since i actually enjoy mowing, that comes to me most weeks...plus i have a fledgling garden that i'm trying to protect from the neighborhood bunnies. anthony laughs at me constantly for being in battle with a bunny. ha!
juicing. i got a free juicer a few months ago and its definitely been appreciated and used! i'll post some of my favorites here soon. :-)

thursday's ten: currently
i ran across this post on one of my favorite blogs last week, and just had to use it sometime. what better time than for thursday's ten?

currently listening on repeat to
mostly pandora stations, but the new Jesus Culture album gets my attention each time. may have to be my next purchase with those gift cards i got for christmas!
currently planning to cook
in the next two weeks, new (to me) recipes will include slow cooker Thai beef, a stuffed baguette, gyros, bacon and caramelized onion tart, and some sort of garlic cheesy bread
currently reading
the lost symbol (dan brown)
and a book that i'll be reviewing here soon: close enough to hear God breathe (greg paul)
currently discovering
how incredibly handy my food processor is. i use that thing at LEAST every other day. love.it.
currently catching up on the trend of
big bang theory. we started watching season one on new year's eve and are now partly through season 3. if we didn't have to do silly things like sleep we'd probably be caught up to the current season!
currently organizing
guest rooms and closets. of course, the pantry/kitchen is ever-ongoing
currently dreading
cleaning out the garage and storage room or as they are known around here the "just put it in the..." areas
currently drinking
the usual suspects of water with fresh mint, daily coffee and the occasional stevia sweet tea, soda stream or diet coke. we've also discovered the carbonated zevia drinks at whole foods are are liking them too
currently desiring
a juicer...a good blender...more toms...uggs...a north face jacket...and lululemon yoga/dance pants
currently creating
mischief? i've been more creative in the kitchen than with jewelry or other crafting lately, but i think it's time to make a few fun pieces, even if they're just for me :-)

hey, it's ok (tuesday) 11.1
hey, it's ok
...to be in shock at the fact that it's november. n.o.v.e.m.b.e.r. people!
...to love the fact that baby g sleeps longer in the mornings now. i get a whole hour to myself most tuesdays and thursdays! this means i can 'nap', play online, or catch up on a show...love.
...to be hopeful that the eye appointment i have in a couple of weeks will show that my eye is improving. i'd rather not have to wear one day contacts for years. they are expensive!
...to not be sure whether the harvard sweatshirt i'm wearing is mine or my husbands. i don't remember having it, but it was on my side of the closet. the fact that it's an xl though likely means it's not mine.
...to be thankful the family i nanny for has finally turned the heat on consistently. i was a bit tired of frozen appendages!
...to still bump up their heat a bit because apparently i'm a bit (lot) more cold natured than they are
...to be craving candy corn pretty much all the time from september through november
...to not know where to begin in showing you wedding photos and telling the story. what do you think?
...to feel the itch to create. i need to make some jewelry or something, stat.
...to feel a huge sense of accomplishment that your google reader is ALMOST caught up. woo-hoo!
...to feel like this is a lame/boring list. um...sorry?
(go visit amber for the original!)

hey, it's ok (tuesday)
hey, it's ok
...to have found a line of suuuuper comfy sweatpants (bamboo and organic cotton, thank you) that you pretty much want to live in.
...to be planning one full evening of creating tomorrow. here's hoping the necklace i have in my head is as fantastic as i think it will be!
...to be honored that i have been chosen to take over the boss's emails and other duties while she's away. considering i have only been at this job since late july, that's pretty cool...and YAY for extra hours worked meaning extra money for wedding stuff!
...to be nerdily (?) excited about the idea of sitting down with my future hubby and coming up with a tentative monthly budget. now...if only we could find a time to SIT.DOWN. ;-)
...to hope that the 24/7 post office is still in service, since i will most likely need to use it wednesday late!
...to feel a *need* to find your label maker for pantry items and the storage room. because, whats more fun than a crisp and shiny label on stuff?
...to hope that there is a fabric out there that both anthony and i will LOVE to recover the couch in the living room with. i so want my red and turquoise scheme, and that just isn't going to happen with the couch in it's present condition.
...to be absolutely one hundred percent disgusted by the slug you found eating the cat food late last night. what is the DEAL with that anyway? been there, done that...maybe i should find some high-sodium food for emi.
go to amber's blog to link up with your own list of ok things...or just to read some awesomely funny stuff.

what i'm loving wednesday (6.15.11)
click the pic to go to the host site!
i'm loving this new job, with children who are precious, precocious and who continually keep me on my toes.
i'm loving times spent with this wonderful guy
i'm loving spiritual community and family. my cell group girls, pastors, and the amazing people God has surrounded me with!
i'm loving odwalla protein drinks. nom, nom.
i'm loving the slightly cooler temperatures and rainfall this week. i love the heat, but this is a nice little break. (and by 'break' i mean in the low 90s...)
i'm loving getting back into jewelry making lately! planning to devote some serious time to it in the next month or so :-)
i'm loving my sunroof and hammock! both allow me access to the outdoors...
i'm loving that my garden is growing, slowly but surely! (this picture is from about a week ago, and that itty bitty tomato is nearly twice as big now!)

what i'm loving wednesday .6
i'm loving snuggles with toddlers
i'm loving that the weather being 90+ and humid means it's perfect acceptable to wear a dress any day of the week for any event.
i'm loving chunky jewelry and mixing & matching different pieces i've made to feel creative again. i'm about to revamp my etsy shop, i think and actually try selling a few things again!
i'm loving that i start with a new family next week. sad to see this job end, but it was such a positive and perfectly fitting together transition that i'm excited about the future. :-)
i'm loving twitter. i thought it was SO tacky for SO long, and now...i'm kinda addicted.
i'm loving times of worship and ministry...the last couple of weeks have been so amazing and God has been doing such great things in my life!
i'm loving that for a few moments life has slowed down and that i get to be creative in the kitchen again more often. perhaps a few more recipes will make their way to these pages soon :-)
i'm loving times spent with girlfriends sipping cups of hot tea or trying new foods or just sitting in the car for an hour telling stories.
i'm loving my amazing fiancé who is willing to stumble down this crazy road with me hand in hand.
i'm loving that i know that i know that i know that God is our amazing provider...and is giving me more than i could ever ask or imagine!

thursday's ten: about turning 30
so by the time next thursday rolls around, i'll be 30. my birthday is monday. that SO does not seem possible! entering a new decade seems like it should be a bit more monumental to me, but i guess because i've done so much living since turning 20 that it really isn't fazing me.
here ARE 10 things about turning 30 in a few days though...things that i've learned in the last 10 years.

1. i love an excuse for celebration. especially when that celebration includes a pub night ;)
2. i'm much more comfortable in my own skin than i was 10, 5, even 1 year ago.
3. that biological clock just keeps ticking along!
4. i'll make my own birthday dessert to share just because irish cream brownies are that good.
(i'll post the recipe here tomorrow. ish.)
5. there are some things and some situations that just aren't worth my time. and i've learned to recognize them a bit more readily.
6. some days don't contain enough caffeine. this gets truer as i get older!
7. there really ARE more aches and pains in my body than there were when i was 20. i'm not imagining that. but i don't have to dwell on them, and i don't have to let them define me or how i feel.
8. taking a few moments to sit on a porch swing or lay in a hammock is time well spent. so is the occasional afternoon nap.
(my 20 year old self is SCREAMING that this statement can't possibly be right...lol)
9. kids really do want structure and boundaries. they crave them. and there is a healthy way to create and enforce these things.
10. you really CAN get used to wearing a piece of jewelry 24/7 :D
how about you? what have you learned or done differently in the last 10 years?

30 before I'm 30
originally i had this scheduled for a few days after my birthday. then came the foreclosure...the packing...the hospital stay...the flood. so i'm just a LITTLE late. :)
here's my 30 before i'm 30 list...30 things i want to accomplish and do before i turn 30 next march! none of these are earth-shattering huge things...but if the last few months have taught me anything it's that even the little things count.
truth be told, i hesitated at even posting this. it seems so...frivolous...after all that's happened just in the last few months. but something my smart boyfriend and his father pointed out to me as we were packing my stuff up for storage and moving is that i need "wins" right now. little ways to smile and acknowledge that i've accomplished *something* no matter how small.
so some of these are silly, some are fun, some are serious, and many are modified because at the time i first wrote this list i had no idea i'd be losing my house.
*modification due to asthma...run at least HALF a 5K. we'll work on the whole after that.
2. take a trip to Holiday World--i want to introduce A to a place that was fun for me as a kid!
3. visit at least one brand-new-to-me place
4. eat 3 fruits/veggies every day for a full month (0/30)
5. read 20 books (0/20)
6. volunteer at *something* at least 5 hours/month (2/12)
7. take one picture per day of my 29th year

7. take one picture per day of my 29th year
*modification due to foreclosure, moving, hospital and flood...start a 365 photo album on january 1 next year like everyone else...and just attempt to take a picture every day for the remainder of this year to get used to that
8. try 30 new recipes (2/30)
9. fit into the majority of my professional wardrobe. This will require losing another 20ish pounds, but preferably 30-40. (3/20)
10. review 12 books in 12 months for le blog (0/12)
11. find and perfect a mojito recipe
12. grow a container herb garden
13. look into graduate programs and decide what to get my master's in (hopefully to be completed by age 35)
14. play the piano daily for a month (0/30)
15. begin practicing yoga again, up to 3x a week by my 30th birthday
16. have at least one meatless day a week
17. wear more hats because I love them
18. entertain at least once a month, whether that be a big party or another couple (can be at A's place or mine as long as I have at least 1/2 the responsibility) (2/12) *modification...cooking for A's family counts!
19. get my cds organized...oy
20. reorganize kitchen

20. reorganize kitchen
(uh...does finding all the kitchen boxes and organizing THEM count?
*modification: find some space saving solutions at IKEA and implement them. Atlanta trip coming up in June)
21. go through wardrobe as I lose the weight and toss clothing that no longer fits into a box for clothing exchange/donation
22. have fresh flowers in the house weekly (from my own garden or an inexpensive bouquet from TJ's)
23. find a wreath for the front door that I love

25. put at least 3 new pieces of jewelry in my Etsy shop per month
26. try at least one new ethnic food group
27. visit NYC
28. unless i'm out of town, keep up with the blogs in my google reader...because 300 unread blogs is NOT a good normal
29. take Emi to the vet for a check-up. it's been awhile...
30. complete a 30 in 30 list (because that's an accomplishment in itself--it's hard!)

It's a Great Day to Go to (Yet Another) Wedding

Happy Saturday everyone!
(go here to join the wordle craze)
and...

Off to Caitlin and Pat's Wedding!
I say "yet another" in the post title because since Anthony and I have been dating it seems like we have one of these every few months!
However, this is the first one that one of us is involved in. This is his turn--he's a groomsman. In the next wedding that we know of (May) I'll be a bridesmaid as well as singing in the ceremony. However, this wedding is here...that one will be in Indiana. Slightly more long-distance!
Thankfully (for the most part) I just get to show up and enjoy all the festivities--beginning with the shower a couple of weeks ago, including the rehearsal dinner last night, and culminating in the wedding today. Caitlin and Pat have found a great little apartment just a couple of miles from me, so that's pretty cool...and I've made jewelry just to go with the dress I'm wearing to the ceremony tomorrow that I'm super excited about.
I'll have to post new jewels on here soon :) I've been busy lately!
Happy Saturday!

Thursday's Ten: Reasons I Suck
No excuses tonight, just a very real list of very real suckage

1. I haven't blogged for nearly a week
2. I'm having trouble with actually eating 2 full meals a day lately. Not on purpose. My schedule has imploded, my days and nights are confused, and I often get to 3 pm and realize I missed lunch. So that means dinner plus a heavy unhealthy snack. This is clearly not making my weight-loss goals happen any faster
3. I have slacked off big-time on exercise. But I did hit the greenway tonight and plan to go again tomorrow if time allows and Saturday if it does not. And both if life turns out perfectly!
4. People around me are hurting and I can't be there for them like I'd like. This includes my boyfriend and his family, who are amazing and wonderful to me...
5. My cat may be sick (she keeps wheezing) and I am worried about the vet bill. On a positive note, she hasn't wheezed at all since Tuesday, so I'm hopeful that whatever it was has now passed.
6. I have a wedding to be in early May and I haven't bought my dress yet because I can't even pay my freaking bills...how can I justify over $100 for a dress?!
7. My temporary job (which I have been sooooo grateful for) ends this week. So I'm stressed to the MAX about what I'm going to do for income. I know that I know that I know that God provides, but I'm still worried. Even though the past year and a half have taught me so much about reliance on Him and that money is not as major as it seems.
8. I barely managed to get a jewelry order done in time for a friend even though I've known about it for months. Thankfully it turned out beautifully and she is grateful (and has no idea that I...forgot about it...for forever).
9. I lost a contact last night and literally spent hours crawling around on the floor and looking under sofa cushions for it. Never found it. Am concerned about how much an eye exams+new contacts will cost...and am literally down to my last one now.
10. People have said (online and in person) this week that they admire my positivity and good outlook on things through this whole unemployment bit. And most of the time, they're right. I've remained pretty positive and stayed on the happy side of life, but there are times like today that I feel anything but. And clearly, that's coming through in this blog post.
I hesitated about posting this, truly. I try to stay positive here and not be a whiny crybaby...but it's my blog and I'll cry if I want to. I promise to make the next post back to the normally scheduled program of cheer :)
(on a very positive note, I start teaching private voice lessons in early April. and there's a possibility of a nanny job from end of April-August which will take me right into the school year. I'm going to either be teaching in August or nannying for a friend, so I know if I can make it through the next month and a half...I'll be ok.)
So, uh, I'm not mcklinkying this. If you want to create a list of reasons you suck, let me know and I'll visit you. If you want to create a list of why I suck, please don't let me know ;)

I need a makeover!
A bloggy makeover, that is.
I don't really need a "design" persay...because I like changing up the backgrounds and all.
What I would LOVE is a button.
and a header.
and possibly a signature.
I have my sick attempt at header and signature visible.
If someone could recommend a site for me to make uber-cool items in all of the above categories, I would be forever grateful.
I don't have monies to pay someone to do all this for me...but I would be more than willing to barter something--jewelry from my store, whatever. If you're interested in that please comment or email me!
And if you recommend a place to go that has the best do it yourself designs for buttons and headers...I'll give you an extra entry in the giveaway that I'll be doing soon!

I don't really need a "design" persay...because I like changing up the backgrounds and all.
What I would LOVE is a button.
and a header.
and possibly a signature.

A look back:
*for those of you wondering, the back is still out. The sinuses seem to be somewhat fading, but I've definitely made the back worse after there had been a significant improvement over the last couple of days. I think I've taken about 10 steps backwards, and just hope that future progress is positive!*
Ellen quote that sums me up right now:
"This morning I hopped right out of bed...and by hopped I mean it took 30 minutes, 6 Advil, a pulley system and a handful of sedatives to get me out of bed in a seated position. And I know that you're probably thinking 'Ellen, you shouldn't have to be taking Advil and sedatives together', but the Advil was for me and the sedatives were for Portia; the screaming is killing her...she's tired of hearing me scream."
Sad...but true. Substitute "Lora" for Ellen and "Anthony" for Portia, and you have the partial scenario of me trying to get up off the floor tonight. It was NOT pretty.
anyway, on to the real blogging!
It's been quite a year! Here's a brief look back...
January: New Year's at Anthony's parents house; began "driving Miss Nancy"; Inauguration of President Obama
February: good friend from college visited; sweet Valentine's day; last praise team retreat ever with Randy (although we had no idea)
March: one of my best friends from high school visited this month; 28th birthday
April: Dave Matthews Band concert...uh...I'm sure there were other fun things too. We did join the zoo this month...and I did have one CRAZY day!
May: Anthony and I traveled together for the first time--to see his aunt in Atlanta; started doing some consulting work
June: 10 year high school reunion and reconnection with Dotty; good friend Laura had her baby Israel (and began the many births of summer '09)
July: Camp with youth group + Anthony's family vacation = over 2 weeks apart! Ugh.
August: Laura and sweet baby Izzy spent a few days at my house; went to Texas to a friend's wedding with Anthony and our friend Ben; celebrated a year of dating the most wonderful man :); began working at Catholic Charities temporarily; found out that Randy and LaJuana were moving
September: visited the Jack Daniels distillery; found out about Sam's cancer
October: 2nd annual ghost tour; finally cut my hair to donate (after over a year of growth); went to my very first NFL football game (between my two favorite teams no less!)
November: Thanksgiving with Anthony's family
December: Christmas with Anthony's family; 2 trips to Indiana (one for the Colts game, one for Christmas); got to sing in a friend's Christmas show downtown; also sold jewelry offline for the first time!

I've been busy...
Had a few ribbon necklace orders to fill

A present or ten to wrap
Moments to spend with friends

Some gelato to indulge in
A baby to snuggle

An impromptu photo shoot to capture

A kiss to steal

And a whole lot of living to do.
And you?
(you can find more at my etsy shop)
Some wine to deliver
A present or ten to wrap

Some gelato to indulge in

A baby to snuggle
And a whole lot of living to do.
And you?

Labels:

Christmastime is here,

jewelry,
lora's crazy life,
photos,
stuff I've made,

Would you Wear It? Part 2
Thanks for your overwhelming response on this post! My friend also liked it, and I was able to make her a necklace that's very similar to the original one she liked! Here's a few pics for you:

It will be available in my store very soon, but if you're a reader of this blog there will be a discount for you! :0) Just email me or leave a comment that you're interested and I'll get back to you with details.
I'm really loving this design and will be making several color combos for Christmas gifts! If you have a suggestion of a color combination that you would like to see, let me know that too!

Thursday's Ten: Thankfulness
As promised, we're doing this early so that everyone can do their Thanksgiving thing on Thursday!

Today's topic is simple. List ten things that you're thankful for.
If you're like me and trying to narrow it down...I'm going to skip all the normal "big stuff" like my health, my amazing boyfriend, God's grace, chosen family, music, and all that...and focus on some of the little things that I don't normally focus on. So, here's my list of little things I'm thankful for.
1. sweet tea, especially when I'm sick and nothing else in the world tastes good.
2. scarves
3. cuddling
4. tank tops and yoga pants
5. date nights
6. pretty food and beverages
7. the occasional bubble bath
8. beads and beading
9. calendars because I get to organize
10. pictures
There's so much to be thankful for--and so many "big things" on that list. But if I'm to be faithful in small things I should be thankful for those small things too, right?
Happy Thanksgiving all!
